Being Photogenic: Is there a secret to it?

Posted on February 15, 2015 at 9:26 pm

Some of us struggle through life with various problems; some people are short, some people are a little bit larger, some have dodgy joints, some have bad backs and, for some of us, the real unfortunate few, are extremely unphotogenic. We are an unlucky bunch, while our friends and families stand in photos, beautiful, natural, with wide grins, perfect cheekbones and impeccable skin. But what is their secret? Or is it all natural? Do models have something in their genes that make the camera love them? Or is it a trick of the lense, maybe a trick of the camera or the skill of the photographer?

Scientists have mixed responses to the question; and for those of us who do struggle to look good in photos it is not good news. Genetics are key to their success; but there is a little bit more to it. Work on your angles, pick a best side and get someone to take a whole bunch of photos of you and just pick the best one! No one needs to know our pain!

When Might you Need a Telephoto Zoom Lens?

Posted on August 26, 2014 at 4:14 pm

A telephoto zoom lens is a beat of a beast, and that’s because it possesses a lot of power in terms of zooming in on a subject, but when would you need this type of lens. It’s certainly not the type you’ll use for studio portrait photography, but it could well be useful for wildlife photography, weddings, events and landscape photography.

If you’re the type of photographer who loves the documentary approach, then this leans could be ideal. You can then take photos from a distance, without disturbing the atmosphere, and it means you can come away with more natural shots.

You will notice that these lenses can cost a considerable sum, and you should take your time before you make any decision. It’s not the type of lens that you can hold back on either, yet they don’t tend to lose value over time.

Posted on March 3, 2014 at 5:17 pm

To become a professional wedding photographer, you have to have a varied set of skills. We’re going to quickly outline 4 of the most important skills when it comes to wedding photography.

  1. An eye for a shot – Without a good photo you have nothing, and every photo start with the photographer and his or her eye. If you’re unable to compose a photograph well, then you’re unlikely to pick up clients, and gain recognition for your work.
  2. Business skills are also important. You have to be able to handle your clients, manage your schedule, collect payment correctly, work out your tax and keep your business running and making a profit.
  3. The next important skill is handling high quality equipment. The best equipment can really help a professional photographer, and it’s important to know how to utilise every element of a professional camera to get a great shot.
  4. People skills are also important, and again without them you will have no business. You have to understand your clients’ needs and the needs of their guests, and give everything they require on their special day – in terms of photography of course.
